WESTERN NAVAL COMMAND

Western Naval Command, the premier operational command of the Indian Navy, headquartered at Mumbai, will play host to the President’s Fleet Review. It is tasked with ensuring the maritime security of the Nation’s Western seaboard. The operational assets of the Command include ships of the Western Fleet & Local Flotilla, Submarines and Aircraft.

The Western Fleet is the ‘Sword Arm’ of the Indian Navy, and comprises a variety of multi-role warships and integral support ships. Western Fleet ships are equipped with cutting-edge technology weapons and state-of-the-art systems for sustained operations in a multi-threat maritime environment. The Western Fleet has participated in many operations since 1947. The Western Fleet was awarded the President’s Colours in 1997 in recognition of services rendered to the Nation.

Naval Dockyard Mumbai, one of the oldest dockyards in the world, was set up in 1736. During the next 150 years, the Yard built over 400 ships of Burma teak, and was known for excellence in workmanship and quality. Over the last 275 years, the Yard has grown to be the Indian Navy’s premier ship repair yard with state-of-the-art facilities for repair and maintenance of Indian naval ships and submarines.
