Passing Out of Saturation Diving Course, INS Nireekshak

Two Officers and 11 Sailors graduated on completion of 15 weeks of Saturation Diving course from INS Nireekshak on 12 December 2019. Chief Staff Officer (Operations), felicitated the trainees by handing over saturation qualification certificates to them. Saturation diving involves descending to the depths of the ocean in a submersible chamber (SDC), followed by the human body’s adaptation inside this chamber – which is maintained at the same atmospheric pressure as the surrounding water – for days and sometimes weeks on end, before coming up to the surface. The chamber has sleeping arrangements and all forms of sustenance that the divers require for the time that they are underwater. This allows them to work continuously at such depths for long periods of time, without having to go through the cycle of pressurization and depressurisation.
