Conditions of Eligibility and Eligible categories

Awarded to all categories of personnel who were/will be borne on the effective strength of the following forces on 3 Dec 71 to 20 Dec 72(both date inclusive)

  • All the ranks of the Army, the Navy and the Air Force, of any of the Reserve Forces, of the Territorial Army, J7K Militia and of any other armed forces of the Union;
  • All ranks of the Railway Protection Force, Police Forces, Home Guards, Civil Defence Organisation and any other organisation specified by Government when deployed in operational areas, viz, J&K, Punjab, Gujarat, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Tripura and members of any or all the aforesaid organisations deployed in such other areas as may specified by Government; and
  • Civilians of either sex serving regularly or temporarily under the orders/directions or supervision of the above-mentioned Forces in operational areas.

The award may be made posthumously.

Design of the Medal and Riband

Medal Circular in shape, made of cupro-nickel, 35mm in diameter and fitted to a ring. It shall have embossed on its obverse the State Emblem with its motto and the inscriptions “SANGRAM MEDAL” on either side of the State Emblem along the rim. On its reverse, it shall have embossed on the centre the rising sun with sprays of laurel below on either side.

Riband Silk ribbon of 32 mm width Maroon colour background with three white vertical stripes dividing it into four equal parts.
