LONG H COURSE
The Long H course is intended to provide a through understanding of hydrographic surveying. The course equips the trainees to plan and execute a full fledged hydrographic survey. The course lays great emphasis on practical training and explanation of various survey instruments/ equipment.

Aims of the Program
Primary Aim. The primary aim of the Long H course is to prepare the trainee to be competent to independently plan, execute and compile report for a Hydrographic survey task. The qualified trainee should be able to analyse field conditions and arrive at an optium solution to problem faced in the field. On completion of the survey task he should be able to compile the data, carry out quality analysis and produce the finished product which would be in conformity to IHO standards.
Complete Practical Hydrography. The Long H course aims to provide a complete understanding in hydrographic surveying combined with a strong practical knowledge. The course feature a mixture of theory and practical with emphasis being laid on the capability of the Officers to conduct an independent survey. Areas concerning observational techniques and post processing are given special attention. In addition, time is also given to conventional tools and means in the field of survey to enable trainees to understand the numerous nuances of surveying.
Project Survey. One of the important constituent of the course content is the conduct of the project survey and submission of Report of Survey by the trainees based on the project. The project survey is carried out at the Mormugao Bay. As part of the project survey all the trainees are divided into two or more syndicates under a qualified guide. The syndicates are to plan out the survey and give an outline on how they would plan calibration, various geodetic observations, sounding operation, strategy for velocity profiling, etc. Thereafter, they are grouped together to execute their plan. This gives the trainee the opportunity to plan and execute entire survey independently and most importantly, deal with the various logistics consideration which they need to bear in mind to undertake such a task.
Log Books. On completion of the Cat B course all trainees are issued with a log book which keeps a record and account of the trainees experience and employment in the field. The log books are issued to Cat B Officers on qualification. It defines all tasks undertaken by an Officer like data acquisition, processing, systems and equipment utilised etc. It is an overall account of how the officer has been employed after the Cat B course and the extent of on job learning he has acquired. the log books are examined to grade the trainees performance and experience. The log book is a detailed account of the knowledge gained by the Officer and it is also a good benchmark to define the standard of the Officer. This is in accordance with the laid down standards S-5, Edition 11.
Recognition by Goa University. The National Institute of Hydrography is affiliated to the Goa University as the Long H Course is recognised for the award of Post Graduate degree of M.Sc (Hydrography) to all eligible students who enrol and successfully complete the Long H course and submit a paper on a professional topic. The scheme of examinations is as mandated in a special ordinance of the Goa University.
Course Participant. The Young Indian Officers undergo training for Bridge Watch-Keeping-Ticket which is akin to STCW 95 qualification and thereafter complete Basic H (Cat B) course at NIH. On completion, the Officers serve onboard a hydrographic vessel for a period of 2-3 years to gain field experience in Hydrogrphic surveying and thereafter come back to NIH for Long H. The entry qualification for the Long H course, therefore, is 2-3 years of practical surveying experience onboard a ship/field after completion of Cat B course or equivalent. The same standard is applied to international trainees. The Long H course is 34 weeks duration. Till date 440 international student have been trained at this Institute. Syllabus. The course covers the IHO published syllabus for CAT A cerification. In addition, emphasis is laid on hands-on training on the hydrographic equipment. Trainees are given the opportunity to have firsthand knowledge on operating various survey equipment and processing software. On completion of the theoretical phase comprising of all aspects of equipment deployement, explotation and conduct of survey including quality control of data set are covered. This phase includes planning the survey, exploiting all equipment to execute the survey and finally carry out quality control mesures on th dataset to arrive at the final fair sheet.
Post Completion. On competion of the course, the young officers of the Indian Navy are posted on one of the nine Hydrographic survey ships for heading the survey team and for watch keeping duties onboard. The survey ships of the Navy are an integral part of the Indian Navy Hydrographic Department, which has the mandate for providing nautical products and hydrogarphic services in India.
Attachmens. During their training the student are attached to various organistation for capsule training on a few subjects. These organistions are specialised in their field and are lead institution of research in the country.
Goa University. Goa University is ranked among the top 25 universities in India. Credit for the stature of the University goes largely to its well established academic and research programs and the ability of the faculty to garner substantial fundig from renowned national agencies and institutions for research in niche areas. The university has published numerous research publication in reputed national/ international journals as well as in various national and international conferences. Goa University has treaded a path of substained growth since its inception in 1985 around the nucleus of Centre for Post Graduate Instruction and Research of the University of Bombay in Goa.
National Institute of Oceanography. The National Institue of Oceanography (NIO), at Dona Paula, Goa established in January 1966 is one of the fory laboratories of the Indian council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). It is a premier national institution of India carrying out research and training in nearly all field of Ocean Studies including off-shore oil industry acitvites. The Insitute also carries out studies in Antarctic waters. NIO is fully equipped, both by the way of material resources and highly qualified human resources to train the Long H course in certain essential topics of hydrography. The training facilities include a well stocked library, modern training aids, well equipped laboratories, model and demonstration room, simulation room for equipment training and dedicated computer system and all the modern equipment / systems pertaining to the subjects proposed to be covered here.
National Hydrographic Office. The National Hydrographic Office, Dehradun is the Naitona Centre for nautical products and services, in addition to being the headquarters of the Indian Naval Hydrogaraphic Department. The Long H Course is attached to the National Hydrographic Office for duration of twol weeks. The topics pertaining to Optional 1 - Nautical Charting Hydrography are covered during this attachment. The Long H course also visit the offices of Survey of Indial, the National institute of Remote sensing, Forest Research Institute and ONGCs Institute of Drilling Technology as a part of their Industrial study tour.
School of Naval Oceanology and Meterology. The School of Naval Oceanology and Meteorolgy (SNOM), Kochi, is a specialist Institute of the Indian Navy, primarily intended to train meterologist for the Indian Navy. SNOM is fully equipped to carry out effective training for the Long H course in the topics of Essential 6 Environmental Science. The duration of SNOM attachment for the Long H Course is of three weeks. During this attachment for the Long H Course is of three weeks. During this attachment, the practical training and necessary hands-on expreince on the latest instrumention in oceanography, is conducted at this Instiution and adequate exposure is also given to emerging trends and technology during their Industrial Study Tour to Naval Physical Oceanographic Laboratory (NPOL) and the marine acoustic research ship of the Navy INS Sagardhwani both based at kochi.
Entry Level Qualifications. The entry level qualification for a student to be eligible for the Long Hydrographic course are:-

| Commensurate knowledge of nautical navigation and seamanship experience in vessel handing onboard coastal crafts and island water transports. | |

Programme Capacity. The Long H course is conducted once a year from March every year. The programme capacity is 20 seats per course. The strength of ongoing course is 14.
