Information Technology plays a key role in network centric operations of the Indian Navy.  Indian Navy has thus come a long way in the field of Information Technology. Information exchanged in the Indian Navy rides on a strong information highway supported by Navy Enterprise Wide Network (NEWN) which serves as Naval Unified Domain (NUD).  NUD has successfully advanced to a stage where the separately managed networks of the ships and establishments have been integrated and secured with information security policies implemented over the entire domain.

Some Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) solutions have been harnessed by the Navy for applications like Human Resource Management, Financial Information System (for financial activities) and logistics management systems (for management of stores and inventory).  With indigenously developed multiband communication satellite Rukmani, there is independent network connectivity with ships at sea.  Further, a National Command Control Communication Intelligence Network hub has been setup at Gurgaon, (NCR) Haryana. The hub interlinks Navy’s Joint Operations Centers and Coast Guard stations for monitoring all the ship activities in Navy’s area of operation and coastal security zones.

With the undeniable important role played by the IT in the modern day Navy, IT (X) cadre for officers was sanctioned by the Government of India.  Case for sanction of IT cadre sailors is also in process.
