ENC works closely with the Tri Service Andaman and Nicobar Command, with Headquarters at Port Blair, to strengthen the country’s reach and influence. It is one of the two operational Commands of the Indian Navy and has jurisdiction over the entire Bay of Bengal as well as parts of the Indian Ocean. A strategic location astride the important Malacca Strait and Dondra Head shipping lanes, the proposed Sethu Samudram Ship Channel and the emerging national proximity over maritime affairs, places immense responsibility on ENC to maintain constant vigil over the region and remain ever prepared. ENC is flanked by the Army’s Eastern Command at Kolkata to the North, Air Force’s Southern Air Command at Thiruvananthapuram to the South and the Andaman & Nicobar Command at Port Blair, to the East. The various units of ENC, spread over Kolkata in the North to Kattabomman in the South, have also kept pace with the times and have evolved into an effective support group which enables ENC to meet all its operational commitments.

Operational Jurisdiction

The Operational jurisdiction of the ENC extends between Longitudes 77˚ 15’ and 91˚ 30’ E. It includes the entire Bay of Bengal and extends up to 16˚ S Latitude into the Southern Indian Ocean with the responsibility to look after India’s maritime interests in this area. The eastern seaboard has a coastline of 2,600 kms and an Exclusive Economic Zone of six lakh square kms, which is about 30% of the country’s total EEZ. This area also includes the waters of six littoral states of the Eastern Indian Ocean viz. Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and Sri Lanka.
