A Tropical depression ‘Berguitta’ in the Southern IOR had intensified into a severe tropical cyclone on PM 17 January 2018. Based on the predictions by the Met Department, the cyclone was likely to impact Mauritius on 18 January 2018. Accordingly, two IN ships (Deepak and Sharda) were diverted towards Mauritius with suitable Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) stores embarked. In addition, IN Ship Sarvekshak, deployed off Mauritius for hydrographic task, was also kept standby to provide immediate relief based on requirement. The cyclone subsequently crossed Mauritius AM 18 January 2018 without causing significant damage and accordingly the two ships deployed for HADR operations were recalled. INS Sarvekshak handed over HADR material comprising provisions, clothing items and medicines to the Government of Mauritius on 27 January 2018.
