Mountaineering Expedition to Mount Kun - Aug 2015

A mountaineering expedition to Mt. Kun (7077 metres) to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of the first successful Indian expedition of Mt. Everest, was flagged off on 20 August 2015 by Vice Admiral Bimal Verma, Chief of Staff, HQENC. The eight member expedition team comprises of four officers including a lady officer and four sailors from the Eastern Naval Command is being led by Lt Cdr S Karthikeyan.

Mt. Kun is the second highest peak of Zanskar Region of J&K. The team will travel to Srinagar and Kargil in end August and proceed to the last motorable point to embark on the expedition. The climbers will undertake 12 to 15 days of arduous trek and establish 05 camps in the higher altitudes of the mountain range before the final Summit Attempt planned on 12 September 15. The expedition will culminate when the team visits Captain MS Kohli at New Delhi to felicitate and pay respect to the accomplished Naval Mountaineer.

Captain MS Kohli, a naval officer had led the first record-breaking Indian Everest Expedition which enthralled the nation. Nine climbers from Army and Air Force reached the summit in September 1965 creating a world record.
