International Coastal Cleanup Day Observed at INS Chilka, Odisha
International Coastal Cleanup Day was observed by INS Chilka on 21 September 2019. A clean-up drive was carried out by over 400 members of the station including, service personnel, DSC company, defence civilians, trainees, students of KV & NCC as well as families and children. The trainees rowed across to the Kalijai Island in whaler boats, while students of KV and NCC undertook clean-up of the beach at Alapur, 10 kms from the Base. Prior to the clean-up, all personnel were given a talk on innovative ways of disposing household waste and were encouraged to segregate the waste before disposal. All personnel were also made aware of harmful effects of plastic and non- biodegradable waste along the coast. The clean-up drive received overwhelming response from the Chilka community and was also appreciated by the local public at Alapur, who joined in the effort.
