Conditions of Eligibility

Awarded for conspicuous courage, under circumstances of very great danger to the life of the rescuer displayed in an act or a series of acts of a human nature in saving life from drowning, fire, rescue operations in mines etc. The medal may be awarded posthumously.

Eligible Categories

Persons of either sex in all walks of life incl Army/Navy/Air Force & all Service personnel, other than the members of the Armed Forces, Police Forces and of recognized Fire Services, if the act is performed by them in the course of duty.

If a recipients of the medal shall again perform such an act of humane service as would have made him or her eligible to receive the same medal such further act of humane service shall be recognized by a Bar to be attached to the riband by which the medal is suspended and, for every subsequent act of humane service, and additional Bar shall be added and such Bar or Bars may also be awarded posthumously. For every such bar, a replica of the medal in miniature shall be added to the riband when worn alone.

Cash Reward : Rs 10,0000/- to the recipients. In respect of a bar to an award, the cash grant will be 50% of the amount specified. If an award is given posthumously, the cash grant will be twice the amount admissible otherwise.

Design of the Medal and Riband

Medal Circular in shape, made of gold, 3mm in thickness, and shall consist of two raised circle, inner and outer. The diameter of the outer circle shall be 58mm and of the inner circle 50mm. At the top there shall be rectangular projection 22.5 mm in length and 12.5 in width on which shall be embossed the Sanskrit letters. At the bottom there shall be another projection 42.5 mm in length and 10mm in width embossed with the name of the medal in Hindi. The edges of these projections shall be raised. On the obverse, shall be embossed in the centre a hand in the “ Abhai Murda”. On the reverse shall be embossed the State Emblem in the centre with the motto in the lower projection.

Riband Red coloured silk riband 32mm in width, edged with light blue stripes each 4mm wide and with one green vertical stripe, 1mm in width, down the centre.
