20th Anniversary Kargil Vijay Diwas Commemoration by Southern Naval Command, Kochi

To commemorate the 20th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas, a series of events have been planned by the Indian Navy over the next few days.

At the Southern Naval Command, Kochi, the commemorative activities include awareness programmes and other events aimed at inculcating patriotic fervour amongst one and all. As part of this, two warships of SNC, namely INS Sutlej and INS Sujata would be open to visit by general public on 20 and 21 July 2019 from 0900 hrs to 1700 hrs at Mattancherry Wharf, berth Q2 of Cochin Port Trust (CoPT). Entry into the CoPT would be free of charge subject to being in possession of valid Government issued Identity proof and without carriage of mobile phones/ cameras.  The visit to the ships is being organised under the theme of “Know Your Armed Forces”. School children from selected schools within Kochi are also scheduled to be hosted on board naval ships and at the naval air station, INS Garuda inside naval base on 20 July 2019.

On 26 July 2019, the ‘Kargil Vijay Diwas’ a Wreath Laying ceremony would be held at the War memorial inside naval base to honour the martyrs of the Kargil War. Besides these, other commemorative activities include two Walkathons for all naval personnel, families and defence civilians planned at INS Dronacharya, Fort Kochi and at naval base on 21 and 23 July 2019 respectively. A Coastal Awareness Campaigns will also be conducted for the fishing community at Malappuram District on 24 and 25 July 2019.

At Navy Children School (NCS). Kochi, ‘Kargil Vijay Diwas’ is being celebrated with a number of activities such as, painting, debate, dramatics and poetry recitation competitions, motivational lectures by serving/retired military officers, screening of documentary / movie on the Kargil War, etc.

Kargil Vijay Diwas is celebrated every year by the country to honour the brave hearts who laid down their lives during Operation Vijay in 1999, which contributed to India’s eventual victory over Pakistan.
